In northern Colorado just south on the Wyoming border lies the Soapstone Prairie Natural Area - about 26 miles north of Fort Collins, CO. This area of rolling hills, prairie grasslands and sandy washes attracts hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders during the seasons when it is open (March 1 to November 30). There is no entrance fee for this area, but pets must be left at home as they're not allowed here.
