Carter Lake is a reservoir huddled against the Front Range foothills owned and (recreationally) operated by Larimer County a few miles southwest of Loveland, CO. With 1,100 acres of water and another 1,000 acres of surrounding public land, this 3-mile long reservoir is more often a destination for water-based recreation like boating and fishing, but there are a couple of hiking trails in this area as well. The 3.5-mile long Sundance Trail follows the entire western shoreline from north to south, while the shorter Fawn Hollow Trail on the east side provides access to some climbing areas as well. This is a fee area that requires entrance and camping permits
