Colorado

One of the more iconic Colorado mountain towns nestled in the San Juan Mountains is Silverton - a historic mining town built in the late 1800s to service the nearby gold and silver mines in the area. Much of the hiking in the surrounding region is not on Forest Service land and are often old mining access roads or trails. The famous Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - a National Historic Landmark - provides a popular tourist route south to Durango, with stops at two remote hiking trailheads along the way providing access to the Weminuche Wilderness.
