Northwest of Fort Collins, a short distance down the Poudre Canyon Highway is the Hewlett Gulch Trail, a 6.1-mile trail with a loop forming the upper section of the hike. Dogs are allowed off-leash here unlike the next door Greyrock Hiking area, so it is a popular spot for Fort Collins-based hikers who want to bring their dog along. From the trailhead, the trail heads north along an old road along Gordon Creek, passing historic homesteads from the early 20th century. After two miles, the trail forks to begin the loop section.
