Grand Mesa Area Hiking
In western Colorado rising about 6,000ft high above the surrounding arid western slope region is the Grand Mesa - the largest flat-topped mountain on Earth, reaching elevations above 11,000ft. Capping this plateau is a volcanic basalt layer that survived the erosion caused by the Colorado and Gunnison Rivers in the surrounding areas, along with more than 250 lakes on top. State Highway 65 traverses this area from north to south from Mesa, CO in the north to Cedaredge, CO in the south with many trailheads along the way. There are plenty of non-motorized trails for hikers to choose from, but also lots of motorized trails especially to the east of Hwy 65.
