One of the few hiking destinations east of Interstate 25 is Cucharas Canyon on Bureau of Land Management land south of Pueblo, CO and northeast of Walsenburg, CO. This small hiking system of only about 9 miles of trail consists of open grassy rolling hills giving way to a canyon with a creek at bottom flowing towards the Arkansas River with old growth ponderosa pines and cottonwood-willow stands. Only accessible from the south via County Road 10 from Walsenburg, there are three trailheads to access the canyon. This land was acquired in 1998 by the BLM due to its natural and cultural value.
