Crested Butte Area Hiking

North of Gunnison, CO at the 'end of the road' lies the small resort town of Crested Butte, CO. Nestled amongst high mountains, this town is only 24 miles (as the crow flies) to Aspen, CO but a 200+ mile drive on roads accessible to most vehicles due to the massive mountains in between. Known mainly as a ski resort, this town is also the southern gateway to the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness to the north, the Raggeds and West Elk Wildernesses to the west and large swathes of the southern Elk Mountains to the east. With plenty of hiking options around town - including on the prominent Mount Crested Butte itself - and lots of backpacking options further afield, Crested Butte is an ideal hiker's destination.
