Buffalo Creek Recreation Area
Only 30 miles southwest of downtown Denver, CO is the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area. This area was devastated in 1996 by the Buffalo Creek Fire where the remnants of the blaze are still clearly visible, but what had been a popular hiking destination in the Pike National Forest is now mainly the realm of challenging mountain bike singletrack trails. With more than 50 miles of non-motorized multi-use trails, through which Segments 2 and 3 of the Colorado Trail pass, this area is worth visiting despite the healing burn scar.
