Colorado

Though most of the hiking trails in Colorado bring one closer to the natural environment, much of the hiking around Victor, CO and Cripple Creek, CO gives you a closer look at how man has exploited the natural environment for mining precious metals. The Vindicator Valley Trail, and many of the other 'trails of gold' in the area, snakes along old gold mines, plants and equipment with plenty of informational signs describing the mining history and culture of the area. Just over the hill to the west is a currently-active operating gold mine for an example of a modern gold mine.
