About halfway between Loveland, CO and Estes Park, CO along Big Thompson Road (US Hwy 34) is the Round Mountain National Recreation Trail. Sharing a trailhead with the City of Loveland's Foothills Nature Trail (which leads to an old Civilian Conservation Corps stone shelter overlooking the Big Thompson Canyon), the Round Mountain National Recreation Trail travels through several granite outcroppings and through ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Views from the trail include the Big Thompson Canyon, the eastern plains of Colorado, Pinewood and Carter Lake reservoirs. Round Mountain trailhead accommodates approximately 20 vehicles.
