Some of the more prominent geographic landmarks in the Golden, CO are North and South Table Mountain, formed by ancient plugs of lava that remained after softer surrounding material eroded away. Managed by Jefferson County Open Space, North Table Mountain is a public recreation area spanning just under 2000 acres with 17 miles of trails circumnavigating the mountain as well as crisscrossing the flat top. Located on the northeast edge of town, this popular area draws hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers for a day of recreation, accessed by trailheads on the south, east and west sides of the mountain.
